What is Semiotics?

Semiotics — is a science that explores signs and signs systems features and properties (of natural and artificial languages).

Semiotics studies characteristic properties of «sign — signifying» construction. It considers all cultural phenomena as sign systems, suggesting that they are ways of communication.

So it satisfies needs of the variety of modern sciences that are trying to bring together phenomena of miscellaneous nature to the fact of communication. Psychology studies perception as the fact of communication, genetics ascertains codes of hereditary information, neurophysiology describes the way of transmitting signals from nerve-endings to cerebral cortex; and all these studies inevitably address to mathematical theory of information, which was created exactly to explain signal transmitting at machine level according to general statements of physical and mathematical disciplines. In the way of their development process, such studies as cybernetics, that research computer utility and automatic systems monitoring and control, are drowning together with biological and neurological researches. So, communicative models are gaining wide application in society’s life study, and cooperation of structural linguistics and theory of information is extremely effective because it provides possibilities to apply structural and informational models while describing cultures, affinity systems, cushions, fashion, gestures language, ambience organization etc., even aesthetics sometimes adopts theory of information concepts.

Now we observe noticeable fieldworks unification that allows describing different objects using same scientific «toolkit».

Speaking of main applied developments of semiotics two very promising trends can be marked out:

1. Artificial languages creation, which allows to create adaptable algorithms of information processing (e.g. programming languages, languages for documents indexing, recordings of scientific terms etc.)

2. Creation of algorithms, providing natural language texts processing (machine translation, automatic indexing and referring, translation fro natural to formal language etc.)
